Homeowners and nonprofits are warming up to an idea launched by Energizing Indiana to increase energy efficiency and support charitable work in communities across the state. For every homeowner  who completes a Home Energy Assessment through Energizing Indiana, a nonprofit organization receives $25 from Energizing Indiana — up to $25,000 per program year! United Way of Marshall County (UWMC) is a participant in the program and response to date has been positive.

“Several participants have reported the program has been very beneficial in identifying areas for savings,” said Linda Yoder, Executive Director for UWMC. “And Energizing Indiana’s partnership with nonprofits is a wonderful way to bring money back to the community to support much needed programs and services.”

Residential Home Energy Assessments from Energizing Indiana are a smart approach to improve the comfort and efficiency of a home. They can help raise a home’s performance, lower energy bills, improve in-home air quality and increase a home’s value.  Those who sign up for the Home Energy Assessment will also receive an energy savings kit (valued around $75) that includes, 9 CFL light bulbs,2 low-flow shower heads, 2 bathroom sink aerators, 1 sink aerator, as well as pipe wrap.

Those interested in scheduling a Home Energy Assessment can go online to www.marshallcountyuw.org or call 574.936.3366 for more information.

Home Energy Assessments are funded by utility rates, and there are no separate fees to participate. Energizing Indiana’s programs are available to electric customers of Duke Energy, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), NIPSCO and Vectren, as well as communities served by the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA).

Energizing Indiana is an initiative that the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC), and the Citizens Action Coalitions formulated in partnership with the six major Indiana utilities with the goal of having the best energy efficiency program in the Midwest. The Energizing Indiana initiative began Jan. 2, 2012 and, in addition to the robust residential program, includes lighting discounts, and rebates for commercial and industrial properties, income-qualified weatherization and educational programs for schools.
